J-14 Editor Blog: Warped Tour 2012 with All Time Low & Lenay Dunn

All-Time-Low-Lenay-J14.jpg

Hey J-14ers!

This summer I got the opportunity to experience a behind-the-scenes look of the Vans Warped Tour. As an avid music fan, especially of the punk-rock genre, I was stoked to see some of my favorite bands perform and get to hang out with them backstage in-between their sets. I attended two of the tour stops in Holmdel, NJ and one in Uniondale, NY, where I got the behind-the-scenes scoop on what it's like being in the hot sun all day all summer, surrounded by music.

It was my first year attending a Warped show so I wasn't sure what to expect. New Jersey's date was a hot one and I focused on catching some of my favorite band's sets and shooting photos. We Are The In Crowd kicked off my afternoon with a high energy set and All Time Low's Alex Gaskarth joined the pop-rockers on stage to sing their single "Kiss Me Again". From there I caught Mayday Parade, Breathe Carolina, We The Kings, All Time Low, and experienced as much of Warped as I could. I met two upcoming bands backstage, Chasing Vegas and Lost In Society, and caught up with our good friends Derek Sanders and Jeremy Lenzo aka Cabbage from Mayday Parade and We The Kings' Travis Clark. From the free water refill stations to the fashion witnessed on the concert-goers (lots of bandeau tops, neon, and body paint!), it was definitely a full experience that left me exhausted by the end of the day.

The next week I attended another date in Uniondale, NY, where my concert companion was Lenay Dunn, the host of MTV's 10 on Top and the face of American Rag. My Warped experience continued as we hung out with All Time Low's Alex Gaskarth and Jack Barakat, Breathe Carolina's David Schmitt and Kyle Even, Taking Back Sunday's John Nolan, and We The Kings at the American Rag tent where they signed autographs for their fans. We caught an acoustic performance from We Are The In Crowd and scoped out the fashion tents including Samii Ryan's jewelry and feather designs and Jac Vanek's bracelets and apparel.

Check out photos from the tour as well as the video diary I made exclusively for you guys including shout-outs from We The King's Travis Clark, Breathe Carolina, Mayday Parade, Lenay Dunn, and clips of the performances I caught throughout the afternoons.

Rock on,
J-14 Editor Nicole

Warped-Tour-Exc.jpg
Warped Tour is very much like a traveling circus. Over a hundred bands with their buses and trailers line empty parking lots for one day before moving on that night to the next tour stop. They're also supplied with not water bottles -- but Monster cans that aren't full of sugary energy drinks but what they call 'Tour Water'. Also, set times and stages often vary. No one knows their set times until the morning of the show where such information can be found once doors open on a huge red inflatable.

We-Are-The-In-Crowd-Warped.jpg
We Are The In Crowd was the first set I caught at the Jersey date. They always put on an energetic show and sang their hits like "Guaranteed to Disagree" and "Kiss Me Again". Check out a clip of them singing with All Time Low's Alex in the video above!

WE-THE-KINGS-TRAVIS-CLARK.jpg
We always have a great time hanging out with this red-haired crooner -- We The Kings' Travis Clark. After a set that had kids screaming and crowd surfing, we met up with Travis to discuss their new single and what's next for the band. Find out in our video diary!

Mayday-Parade-J14.jpg
Mayday Parade is the epitome of a band that truly loves what they're doing. I can't get enough of their new tracks "When You See My Friends", "Oh Well, Oh Well", and their debut album's "Jamie All Over".

Lenay-Dunn-J14.jpg
I had a great time hanging out with MTV and American Rag's Lenay Dunn. We posed for fun photos at the American Rag Tent, rocked out to some great sets, and hung out backstage with All Time Low, Breathe Carolina, and Taking Back Sunday all day in Uniondale, New York.

Lenay-Breathe-Carolina-All-Time-Low.jpg
Here's a couple shots of Lenay interviewing Breathe Carolina and All Time Low backstage for American Rag. Both bands were super excited to be on the Vans Warped Tour this year and we couldn't wait to see their sets.

Lenay-Dunn-American-Rag.jpg
Lenay chatted with fans and people in line for the We The Kings' signing at the American Rag tent. She even did some filming for her own home videos on her website. Check them out here.

Lenay-We-The-Kings.jpg
Lenay and We The Kings are pals who even traveled to Brazil together to shoot the cover and a spread for American Rag's Ragged Mag. Check out their latest issue for free here!

We-The-Kings-Signing.jpg
As soon as doors opened that morning, the free wristbands to meet We The Kings' immediately sold out. Later that afternoon, dozens and dozens of excited fans waited in line for the chance to speak with and get a few autographs from the pop-rock group. We watched the experience from the sidelines under the American Rag tent, full of smiles and even some happy tears as fans got to meet their idols.

Breathe-Carolina-J14.jpg
You would never tell that anything was 'off' from Breathe Carolina's performance in Jersey where they performed their catchy singles "Hit and Run" and "Blackout", with a fog machine that coated the stage. But when we met up with David and Kyle backstage a week after in New York they told us they were sick as dogs with the stomach flu. Catch their shout-out to J-14ers in our video diary.

J-14 Editor Picks: Best Music Videos of 2011

KatyPerryKathyBethTerry.jpg

As 2011 draws to a close, the J-14 editors reflect back on our favorite music videos from the year:

"Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" (Katy Perry)
"Besides this song being insanely catchy, Katy's alter-ego Kathy Beth Terry's transformation from geek to 80s chic is as eye-catching as the bright clothes she wears. Plus, the celeb cameos rock in this video. I want Kevin McHale to be my knight in shining armor!" --Associate Editor Kim Messina

"Skyscraper" (Demi Lovato)
"Demi Lovato gives such an emtional, yet empowering performance in Skyscraper." --Photo Editor Danielle Kepler

"Without You" (David Guetta ft. Usher)
"I can't get sick of this song, no matter how many times I hit re-play on my iTunes. (I also can't help but smile and sing along every time I hear it!)" --Editorial Associate Katie Amey

"Best Friend's Brother" (Victoria Justice)
"It was such a cute concept and I'm still singing, 'BFB!'" --Assistant Editor Rachel Sheehan

"Jet Lag" (Simple Plan ft. Natasha Bedingfield)
"I don't know what it is about airport videos, but they get to me every time (case in point: Backstreet Boys' 'I Want It That Way'). But the back and forth between Simple Plan's Pierre Bouvier and Natasha's scenes are just so heartfelt." --Editor-in-Chief Rachel Chang

"All I Want For Christmas Is You" (Justin Bieber & Mariah Carey)
"Two great talents combine!" --Designer Tanya Swartz

"Say You Like Me" (We The Kings)
"It's a music video for one of We The Kings' catchiest songs and an interactive video game. I can't think of anything more unique than that." --Photo Assistant Nicole Mazza

J-14 Q&A with We The Kings' Travis Clark

TravisClarkDemiLovatoExclusive.jpg

We The Kings have had a crazy year between releasing their third album Sunshine State of Mind, headlining the Friday Is Forever tour, and then finishing the year with a string of dates opening for Demi Lovato. Front man Travis Clark recently chatted with J-14 all about the new album, the sweet story behind the album's second single "Say You Like Me", and what it's like touring with his close friend Demi on the road.

Q: Where did the title Sunshine State of Mind come from?
Travis Clark:
We live in Florida, which is the sunshine state, and because we pretty much spend eleven months on the road and a couple days here, a couple days there at home, we try to keep with us our family and friends from our hometown. It's really the only thing that we know for anything permanent and we wanted to dedicate a record to our friends and family. Sunshine State of Mind is kind of saying like, "Wherever we go, we always have you guys on our mind."

Q: What's the most personal track to you off the album?
Travis:
It's weird but every song has a certain spot in my heart. Nothing was just thrown on the record, everything was there for a reason and there because I wanted it to be there. But there's a song off the record called "You and Only You" and it's a song that I really want to kind of one day sing to my wife -- wherever she is in the world. I think it's the most romantic song that I've ever written and I think it's the ultimate wedding song without straight up saying that this is a wedding song, you know? The lyrics and everything just means a lot to me. It's like when you find that one person that makes you want to stop looking and it's a really special thing and it's kind of just letting everyone know I'm still on the search for that one and only.

Travis Clark, lead vocalist of We The Kings, recently chatted with J-14 all about the music video. "You choose your own adventure," he tells J-14. "It's one of the videos that you can't really stray away from. You can't go and do something else on your computer or the video will stop which is kind of cool. We definitely are big gamers. J-14 Editor Blog: Friday Is Forever at Six Flags Great Adventure

TheSummetSet1J14SixFlags.jpg

Hey J-14ers!

There's little that I enjoy more in life than good music and roller coasters, so when I was asked if I wanted to spend the day hanging out with a few of my favorite bands, there was no way I was saying no. On July 28, I drove out to Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ, and hung out with some of the most genuine and talented performers that I've ever met -- We The Kings, The Summer Set, Hot Chelle Rae, The Downtown Fiction, and Action Item were in town on the Friday is Forever Tour and they weren't about to bypass the opportunity to check out the park before and after their show (with me in tow!).
